DESIGN CASE / Tomo

Designing for replies when they matter.

A conversation-app design inspired by my girlfriend’s need for timely replies when unsure about Korean. I designed voice-message and notification screens, and explored time limits and Live Activity as ways to encourage prompt responses.

01 / CONTEXT

Why I started Tomo.

Tomo began with my girlfriend’s need for timely replies when she was unsure about Korean. Even a short question could need an answer at a particular moment. If a reply arrives too late, the moment when you needed it may have passed. I wanted to give the other person a reason to respond now.

02 / DESIGN DECISIONS

A reason to reply now.

01

Exploring a time limit for replies

I explored a viewing time limit as a reason to reply sooner. The screen shown presents voice messages and characters; it does not specify what expires, the duration or what happens after expiry.

02

Notification design and a Live Activity concept

I designed a notification card for checking conversation status outside the app. The “32 seconds ago” label shows elapsed time. A Live Activity showing time remaining was a separate concept and is not represented in this mockup.

04 / OUTCOME & REFLECTION

What I designed.

I created conversation screens with voice messages, characters and notifications, and explored time limits and Live Activity as further directions. These are design artifacts; user reactions and changes in response time have not been confirmed.
